Narra la historia de Lola Montes (1821-1861), cortesana y bailarina famosa en toda Europa. Nacida en Irlanda, Lola (Martine Carol) fue la amante de grandes hombres como el músico húngaro Franz Liszt o Luis I de Baviera. Ya en el ocaso de su carrera, trabajó en un circo de Nueva Orleáns, Luisiana, donde realizaba un número acrobático mientras un maestro de ceremonias (Peter Ustinov) narraba al público su escandalosa vida.
